Italian pediatric specialists visit the National Institute of Child Health

KARACHI: A team of pediatric specialists from Gaslini hospital, Italy, visited the National Institute of Child Health (NICH) today. The hospital serves over 1000 patients daily in its out patient department. The Italian delegation visited the various departments of the NICH including the newly commissioned 13 bed medical ICU and the 70 incubator neonatal ICU which is the largest such facility in the country.

The guests appreciated the efforts made by the NICH team in view of excessive patient load that the hospital caters for from all over country which is borne by the fact that nearly  50% of the patients are from outside Karachi and all of the treatment is provided Free of Cost.

The visit was arranged by the Consulate of Italy, Karachi. The Italian Consul General Ms. Anna Ruffino, speaking on the occasion appreciated the efforts of the NICH and said that she was moved by the plight of the Pakistani children and wanted to create a bridge between the two nations to benefit them.

The team was headed by Dr. Petralia who was accompanied by Dr. Ramenghi and Dr. Rosati.  Members of the delegation speaking on the occasion said that they were amazed at the work being done and magnitude of patients being treated on a daily basis as well as the range of diseases that the doctors treat, some of the rare ones which they haven’t seen in Italy. They expressed their desire to create a program of mutual collaboration between the two institutions as their hospital considers that a child is a child, wherever there are on the planet. The slogan of Gaslini Hospital is “We heal the children no matter where they are”
