HOUSTON: Houston Mayor John Whitmire has proclaimed July 21 as “Muhammad Saeed Sheikh Day” during a National Civilian Honor Celebration held at the Hilton Houston Post Oak to honour the humanitarian for receiving the Sitara-e-Khidmat.
The event, attended by more than 400 guests, was jointly organized by the Consulate General of Pakistan in Houston, Sister Cities of Houston, the Host Committee led by Chief Host Syed Javaid Anwar, and the Organizing Committee.
The gathering brought together elected officials, members of the Consular Corps, business and faith leaders, media representatives, and community members from across the United States. Attendees included State Representative Dr. Suleman Lalani, while the event was moderated by Dr. Aisha Khattak.
Mayor Whitmire, delivering the keynote address, recognized Sheikh’s 45 years of public service, citing his contributions to the annual Houston Iftar, disaster relief, community development, and interfaith outreach. He also announced plans to visit Pakistan alongside Sheikh during his next term in office.
Opening the ceremony, Consul General of Pakistan Muhammad Aftab Chaudhry praised Sheikh’s lifelong dedication to public service and his efforts in strengthening ties between Pakistan and the United States. Sister Cities of Houston President James Post highlighted Sheikh’s role in promoting cultural exchange and municipal diplomacy between Houston and Karachi.
Chief Host Syed Javaid Anwar, reflecting on a two-decade friendship, commended the Pakistani government for awarding Sheikh the national honor and acknowledged the collective effort of the hosts, sponsors, and volunteers.
Sheikh, who was introduced by his son Muhammad Samee Sheikh prior to the screening of a biographical documentary, accepted the award by expressing gratitude to the President of Pakistan. Citing the Junior Chamber International (JCI) creed—”Service to Humanity is the Best Work of Life”—as his guiding principle, Sheikh dedicated the civilian honor to the volunteers, donors, and non-profit organizations he has partnered with throughout his career.
Over his four-and-a-half decades of service, Sheikh has worked with various entities, including the Pakistan Jaycees, Pakistan Chamber of Commerce USA, Houston-Karachi Sister City Association, Alliance for Disaster Relief, and Houston Iftar.
The program concluded with a standing ovation from the assembled dignitaries and attendees.
