KARACHI: The Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA), under the Environment, Climate Change & Coastal Development Department, organized a seminar on “Environmental Governance and Sustainability Challenges in Sindh” at Jasmine Hall, Beach Luxury Hotel, Karachi. The event brought together government officials, policymakers, industry experts, environmentalists, and civil society representatives to discuss pressing environmental issues and explore sustainable solutions.
Mr. Dost Muhammad Rahimoon, Advisor to the Chief Minister Sindh for Environment, Climate Change & Coastal Development, graced the event as the Chief Guest. In his address, he emphasized the government’s commitment to strengthening environmental governance and tackling pollution challenges through policy interventions, regulatory enforcement, and public awareness initiatives.

The keynote presentation was delivered by Mr. Naeem Ahmed Mughal, Director General, SEPA, who provided an in-depth analysis of Sindh’s environmental landscape, particularly highlighting the alarming state of air and water quality in Karachi and other parts of the province. He shared findings from SEPA’s recent environmental surveys, revealing that air pollution levels in many areas fall within the “unhealthy” to “very unhealthy” categories, while water quality remains unfit for consumption in several locations. He stressed the urgent need for collaborative efforts to address these challenges through stringent environmental regulations, industrial compliance, and community engagement.
Mr. Agha Shah Nawaz, Secretary, Environment, Climate Change & Coastal Development Department, also spoke at the seminar, reiterating the department’s commitment to enhancing environmental governance and promoting sustainable development. He underscored the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration in tackling plastic waste, solid waste management, and marine pollution, urging industries and citizens to adopt eco-friendly practices.

The seminar concluded with a souvenir distribution ceremony, where Mr. Dost Muhammad Rahimoon, Mr. Agha Shah Nawaz, and Mr. Naeem Ahmed Mughal presented tokens of appreciation to distinguished speakers and panelists for their contributions toward environmental sustainability.
The event served as a vital platform for constructive dialogue on Sindh’s environmental challenges and the way forward, reinforcing the collective responsibility of government bodies, industries, and civil society in ensuring a cleaner and healthier environment for future generations.
