Malaysia Appoints Ambassador Abu Bakar Mamat as High Commissioner-Designate to New Zealand

KUALA LUMPUR: Sultan Ibrahim presented the Letters of Credence to 15 newly appointed Heads of Diplomatic Missions of Malaysia during an official ceremony held at Istana Negara. The ceremony was attended by Mohamad Hasan and senior officials from Malaysia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Among the distinguished diplomats appointed was Abu Bakar Mamat, who has been named the High Commissioner-designate of Malaysia to New Zealand. His appointment reflects Malaysia’s ongoing commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and advancing strategic international cooperation.

Born in Kuala Lumpur, Ambassador Abu Bakar bin Mamat holds a Bachelor’s Degree with Honours in Political Science from the International Islamic University Malaysia. He joined Malaysia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2001 as an Administrative and Diplomatic Officer and most recently served as Undersecretary of the Europe Division since 2023.

Ambassador Abu Bakar brings with him extensive diplomatic experience, having previously served as Ambassador of Malaysia to Chile from 2020 to 2023 and as Consul General of Malaysia in Karachi, Pakistan from 2011 to 2015. He also served at the High Commission of Malaysia in Windhoek, Namibia, alongside several key leadership roles within Malaysia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including positions related to ASEAN affairs, public diplomacy, regional cooperation, and international development.

The appointment of these experienced diplomats highlights Malaysia’s dedication to enhancing its global presence, strengthening diplomatic partnerships, and safeguarding national interests amid evolving geopolitical developments worldwide.
