DUBAI: In a move to prepare for the upcoming 2025 Asian Chess Championship for Inmates, the General Department of Correctional and Penal Institutions at Dubai Police concluded its in-house chess tournament for male inmates, held in collaboration with the Dubai Chess and Culture Club.

Brigadier Salah Jumaa Bu Osaiba, Acting Director of the department, attended the closing ceremony alongside division heads and Mr. Saeed Yousuf Shukri, Secretary-General of the Chess Club.

Brigadier Bu Osaiba said the tournament is part of the department’s ongoing efforts to promote rehabilitation and reintegration through intellectual and cultural engagement. He noted that Dubai’s inmate team had previously won the 2024 Continental Chess Championship, held virtually in the United States, and is now preparing for the 2025 Asian edition.

Forty inmates participated in the competition, and the top three players were awarded medals during a celebratory ceremony that highlighted chess’s role in developing discipline, critical thinking, and focus.

Brigadier Bu Osaiba also presented a commemorative shield to the Secretary-General of the Dubai Chess and Culture Club, in recognition of the club’s continued support and contribution to nurturing inmate talent.
