Member States today elected Tomas Lamanauskas of Lithuania as the next Deputy Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations specialized agency for information and communication technologies.

The election, completed in one round, took place at the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference (PP-22) currently underway in Bucharest, Romania.

In this key executive role, Mr Lamanauskas will assist ITU’s next Secretary-General, Doreen Bogdan-Martin (U.S.), who was elected separately earlier in the day.

Full election results are available here.

Lamanauskas has pledged to foster broad partnerships for connectivity; to increase ITU and industry ambitions on net-zero emissions and climate sustainability; and to integrate results-based management into all ITU processes.

The Deputy Secretary-General, like ITU’s other four elected officials, will serve a four-year term starting 1 January 2023.

Lamanauskas currently works in the private sector and previously headed ITU’s Corporate Strategy Division.

Over the coming days, Member States at the Plenipotentiary Conference will also elect the Directors of ITU’s Radiocommunication Bureau, Telecommunication Standardization Bureau, and Telecommunication Development Bureau.

The resulting five-person leadership team will oversee ITU’s programmes and operations until the next Plenipotentiary in 2026.

Further elections will follow for the 12 members of the Radio Regulations Board and the 48 seats of the ITU Council.
