Former Swiss Consul General visits Karachi and Hyderabad

KARACHI: Mr. Emil Wyss, former Swiss Consul General in Karachi, recently visited the metropolises of Karachi and Hyderabad. In his week-long stay, Emil Wyss had over thirty engagements in which he visited several Pakistani NGOs including: Dar-ul-Sakoon for children with mental and physical challenges, Bint-e-Fatima Old Home (Trust) for homeless women, Alamgir International Welfare Trust to encourage young students for successfully concluding their internships in the social sector, Edhi Foundation – to offer his condolences to Bilquis Edhi (wife) and Faisal Edhi (son) of Late Abdul Sattar Edhi, Afzaal Memorial Thalassemia Foundation where he also donated blood for Thalassemia major children, Markaz-e-Umeed school for special children, Umeedgah Rehabilitation Welfare Trust for kids with special abilities, Brenton & Carey Hostel for homeless girl students, Karachi Vocational Training Centre for the Intellectually Challenged, Deaf Reach Centre, Friends of Burns Centre at the Civil Hospital, Marie Adelaide Leprosy Centre – to offer his condolences to Management and Staff for Dr. Ruth Pfau’s passing away, and Make-a-Wish Foundation to fulfill wishes of terminally ill children.

On August 14 Mr. Emil Wyss dressed in traditional shalwar kameez and wearing a waistcoat and Peshawari chappals also attended flag hoisting ceremony at the Quaid-e-Azam’s mausoleum.

During his day visit to Hyderabad, the former diplomat met student delegation of a public school from Kotri, visited Neuro Medical Centre, and attended Swiss-Pak celebrations organized by Rotary Club of Hyderabad Galaxy. At the Centre of Excellence for Arts and Design (Mehran University – Jamshoro) Mr. Wyss also inaugurated paintings exhibition.

In Karachi he gave a presentation on country branding to students of Greenwich University. He also toured the offices of BOL News as well as inaugurated the new activity center of Dawood Global Foundation that runs LADIESFUND® and Educate-a-Girl programs. During his visit to ILMA University, Mr. Wyss met delegation of Pakistan Academic Consortium and also addressed the members of the federal cabinet of Pakistan Youth Parliament.

Speaking to senior journalists in an informal meet-up at a local hotel, Mr. Wyss said “Because of exceptional and world-class Pakistani hospitality, my heart is half red as a Swiss and half green as a Pakistani. After finishing my assignment as Consul General, I decided to come back again in August 2017 to celebrate 70 years of Pakistan Independence Day with my Pakistani friends”. After taking early retirement from the Swiss foreign affairs ministry in July this year, Mr. Wyss chose to visit Pakistan as his first international tourist destination. Several leading Pakistani businessmen and social elites hosted in Mr. Wyss’ honor numerous networking events which were well attended by diplomats, expatriates, politicians, and media representatives.
